Patagonia Facts

Here are some interesting facts about Patagonia:

National Parks

First established in 1943, Nahuel Huapi National Park was the first national park in Argentina and covers over 2,722 square miles (705,000 hectares).

Lying just to the north of Nahuel Huapi is Lanin National Park (1,463 square miles or 379,000 hectares).

Together they form over 4,185 square miles of protected national park.

Natural Diversity

Patagonia can be subdivided into distinct geographic regions, each with features worthy of exploration.

• HIGH ANDES - above 5,250 feet (1600 meters) high with rocky soils, low temperatures, strong winds and heavy snowfall

• VALDIVIAN RAINFOREST – the most southern rainforest in the world with plentiful rainfall supporting a variety of plant life such as the alerce, coihue, vines, ferns and mushrooms

• MOIST FOREST – larger trees like the coihue and beech form thick forests with bamboo-like cana colihue; habitat for animals such as the pudu deer, the Magellanic woodpecker and more

• TRANSITION FOREST – small cypress woods alternate with dry grasslands where rainfall is less plentiful

• STEPPE- wide-open, windblown expanse of rolling land where the vegetation is mostly hardy grass and small shrubs; populated by animals such as the guanacos and offers excellent Andean Condor viewing.

Catedral Ski Resort

Only 16 km from Bariloche, Catedral ski resort is the largest ski facility in South America.  It also provides great summer hiking activities as well.
