Where is Patagonia?
The region of Patagonia is roughly considered the area south of the Rio Colorado in southern Argentina and south of the city of Puerto Montt in Chile. The Andes mountains form the backbone of the region and act as an international border between the two countries.
Will I need a passport and a visa to visit Patagonia?
Citizens of the United States, Canada and the European Community all require a valid passport to enter Argentina and Chile. A 90-day tourist visit is issued upon arrival into either country.
Make sure you check your passport two months before departure to ensure it is up-to-date and will not expire during your trip.
How do I get to Patagonia?
The majority of international flights pass through the capital cities of Buenos Aires, Argentina or Santiago, Chile. You can easily spend a couple of days in either city before connecting on to Bariloche.
The most common departure cities in the U.S. are Los Angeles, Dallas, Miami and New York.
Delta, United, American as well as LAN Chile, Aerolineas Argentinas, and other Latin American carriers like Lacsa, all have flights to one or both cities. Flights to Bariloche are primarily with LAN Argentina (LAN Chile) or Aerolineas Argentinas.

How safe is travel to Patagonia?
The Argentine Patagonia is an extremely safe region. Parallel 41 has chosen all its partners with the safety of our clients as a top priority. All outdoor excursions from horseback riding to whitewater rafting have been arranged with companies with only the best history of safety and dependability.
Does Parallel 41 only work with groups?
Parallel 41 caters to couples, families, and small groups. The smaller size allows us to maintain a high-level of quality and personalized service. Each program is developed individually to meet the needs and expectations of each couple or small group. How remote or difficult are the programs?
That will depend on your desired experience. Programs are developed specifically for each client. Generally, all accommodations and excursions are within two hours of the resort towns of San Carlos de Bariloche or San Martin de los Andes.
Bariloche is the region’s commercial and tourism hub for Northern Patagonia. It has a modern airport with service to the gateway cities of Buenos Aires, Argentina and Santiago, Chile. It can also be reached by the lake crossing from Chile. San Martin also has a regional airport.
Both towns are home to dozens of restaurants and shops as well as hospitals, banks and a post office.
Activities will depend on your fitness level and holiday expectations.
Will I need special insurance or will my domestic insurance cover me during my travels?
Parallel 41 recommends that you consider travel insurance for your trip to cover late cancellation and other travel-related incidences.

As personal insurance policies vary, we suggest that you check with your current health insurance provider to determine what is covered when traveling overseas. Medical attention can be found in various towns with major hospitals located in Bariloche. When is the best time to visit Patagonia?
Patagonia´s seasons are the opposite of those in the Northern Hemisphere. Generally, the best time to visit is during the months of November through April. Temperatures and precipitation levels vary from season to season and from region to region.
The best advice is to pack for all types of weather including rain, and plan to layer your clothing. Hats and sunscreen are extremely important as the sun in Patagonia can be intense.

Spring (Sept - Nov): Cool days with days growing longer. Cool nights. Daytime temps from 45°F to 68°F. Summer (Dec - Feb): Warm, sunny days with cool nights. Little rain. Daylight lasts until about 10 p.m. Autumn (March - May): Cool, crisp days with cool nights. Rain towards May. Temps vary from 39°F to 57°F. Winter (June - Aug): Cold and snowy. Temps vary from 32°F to 50°F.

How much money should I bring?
Credit cards are accepted in town for most tourist-related needs. ATMs are also readily available in both Bariloche and San Martin. If you bring cash, US dollars are the preferred foreign currency.
There are airport departure taxes in both Santiago and Buenos Aires. Chile also has a reciprocity arrival tax of approximately US$100 for inbound American citizens who stay over in Chile.
Do I need an specific vaccinations before vistiting Patagonia?
There are currently no required vaccinations for travel in Patagonia but you should consider inoculations or boosters for Hepatitis A, Typhoid Fever, and Tetanus.

Are there volunteer opportunities while on holiday or vacation?
